The 4th graders' Symbolic Monarch Butterflies are at 11 de Julio Elementary School and Octavio Paz Middle School in Mexico. Students found their class butterflies in the photo gallery on the website! Students compared schools and found some differences, but also many similarities between school life for them and the students in Palo Amarillo Community, Mexico. Feliz Ano Nuevo!
LBI Grade School's Spanish classes began 2017 with some Spanish New Year's traditions.
3rd graders created a Muneco del anoviejo (A Colombian tradition)
4th and fifth graders threw water out the window to symbolize the end of the old year. (A Cuban tradition)
6th graders had a mock count down of the passing into the New Year eating 12 grapes and watching Madrid's Puerta del Sol clock tower.
Grades 3-6 learned about Mexico's and Spain's observation of Three Kings Day.
Click on the link for New Year and Three Kings' Day to learn more about these traditions.

4th Grade: Symbolic Monarch Migration
Our 4th graders will be participating in the 21st annual "Symbolic Monarch Butterfly Migration" with students across North America. Over 60,000 students in the United States and Canada will create symbolic butterflies this fall and send them to Mexico for the winter. At the monarch sanctuaries in Mexico, children will protect the butterflies and send them north in the spring. The symbolic butterflies build bridges of communication between students in Mexico, USA, and Canada.
For the past seven years the fourth graders have participated in the Symbolic Monarch Butterfly
Migration Project. This is a cross curriculum project involving World Languages,
Art, Technology, Science, and Social Studies. Students will make a class butterfly,
as well as, an individual life size butterfly to be sent to children who live beside
the monarch butterflies’ winter home in Mexico.
